This photo of Hilda popped up in my FB memories today and brought back more memories of her. It’s been over a year since my wife and I lost Hilda. She was a very special dog. An abandoned deaf Boxer that we found in 2014 at the Georgetown, DE SPCA. She had been in a previous Delaware SPCA for a year and was moved there recently.
We were living nearby in Rehoboth Beach and still feeling sad from losing Jonesy, another one-of-a-kind dog (a rambunctious Jug) that we loved. And decided to take a trip to the SPCA one day to visit, with no intention of getting another dog, and then eat at a favorite place close by. And the rest is history. We spotted Hilda out on a walk, prancing through some woods near the facility, and met her as soon as we got out of the car. Two hours later she was on the way home with us. Still licking, loving, and appearing happy.
Now we have Matilda (an 8-month-old and sometimes crazy Goldendoodle.) And as much as we love her and Jonesy, we will always remember Hilda for being that one special dog.
I believe it was the combination of Hilda being deaf and abandoned that endears us to her so much. But we laugh when I say she listened better than Jonesy and Matilda. She loved walking in downtown Rehoboth and being on the boardwalk and the beach. Maybe that’s another reason we feel she was so special. My wife and I loved that too.
